Lidocaine, also known as Xylocaine, is a local anesthetic used for local anesthesia or nerve blocks. It typically begins to take effect within a few minutes and can last from half an hour to three hours. It can also be directly applied to the skin or mucous membranes to numb the area.
This medication is used on the skin to stop itching and pain from certain skin conditions (such as scrapes, minor burns, eczema, insect bites).
